Good News (ft. Jonathan McFadden)

about

With the rise of Juneteenth and the recent celebration of July 4th, we're forced to examine this "freedom" we seem to be so proud of. We don't have the freedom to live when we encounter police. If you get locked up for a crime, all of your freedom and rights are stripped away and you're reverted to an enslaved status.

We've made so much progress but still claim freedom in this country that was built by us, but not for us.

I was fortunate that Jonathan McFadden shared the story of his father growing up in Lake City, NC to bring this point home. Freedom is no fear. We're not there yet.

lyrics

## Intro - written by Jonathan McFadden

Sometimes, Dad talks about White people in Lake City with a certain scorn in his throat. It’s probably cause he was treated like a second-class citizen.

you know, but there was reprieve. Dad and his buddies they would sometimes go to Atlantic Beach on the weekend. Of course, they couldn’t go down to Myrtle Beach. because myrtle beach was for White people.

There was a long laundry list of things they couldn’t do. If you bought something from a White-owned store, you didn’t return it. If you ordered food at a restaurant but your order was wrong, you didn’t dare speak up.

You stayed quiet and you stayed unassuming. you see That way, you’d stay out of jail. You’d stay alive.

## Chorus X2

still waiting on my freedom papers

yeah waiting on some good news

looking for the messenger

my pony express letter in dress blues

is it Lincoln's or the governors pardon

get off the line my call is coming through

brother can you spare a dime

you free? who me? nah. you?

## Verse

freedom as real as the boogieman

slight of hand that disappears when you look again

the spot where I stand is where Plymouth rock lands

it ebbs and it flows like a mirage in the sand

from henceforth known as the petition of a man

this verse is the purpose to dismantle the plan

hold a candle to the system so in the flames we dance

breathe deep for every black breath that never had a chance

for every daughter who never had a dance with her father

and every bystander officer who simply couldn't be bothered

for every mothers tear soaked soul stirring hollers

to return her child to earth with her own life as the offer

while black blood sweat and tears puts pennies in your coffers

black blood sweat and tears get's no pity from the coppers

the free version of me is a myth and an imposter

stuck frozen in the spotlight of the choppers
